The Chartered Institute of Journalists has condemned the killing of Palestinian-American correspondent for Al Jazeera Shireen Abu Aqla in Jenin 11th May 2022.

She was killed while covering a raid by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and her producer Ali Samoudi was shot and wounded.

The Institute is calling on the Israeli and Palestinian authorities to cooperate in their investigation into her death to ensure the future protection of journalists and media workers in Israel and occupied territories.

Institute President, Michael Hardware, said her death was: “Appalling, shocking and a terrible reminder of the risks professional journalists face when reporting the tensions and conflict between Palestinians and Israelis.”

Mr Hardware said: “Shireen Abu Aqla was widely respected and esteemed and her death is a great loss to the journalism profession. We send our deepest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.”

He added: “Everyone needs to know whether her shooting was deliberate or accidental and what can be learned about preventing anything like this happening again.”
